Box Score Claremont, Calif. - The CMS Volleyball team scored the final six points of the first set for a 25-23 win and went on to a tightly-contested 3-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening at the Linde Activities Center.
Set scores were 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22 in favor of the Athenas. Senior All-American Allie Frappier (pictured) had 30 kills in a losing effort for the Sagehens, who fall to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in the SCIAC. CMS improves to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
The Sagehens had a 23-19 lead in the first set, but Audrey Breitweiser had three kills in the closing 6-0 run that swung the momentum of the match. CMS added a 25-22 win in the second set, getting the last two points, including another key kill from Breitweiser to set up the set point.
Frappier finished off the third set with a kill at 24-23, her ninth of the set, to send the match to a fourth frame. CMS then jumped out to a 14-7 lead and appeared to be on its way to the win, but the Sagehens dug deep and came all the way back to tie the score at 19-19. The Athenas responded, though, with a 4-0 run and converted on their third match point with Breitweiser yet again coming through in a big spot.
Nicole Kerkhof led CMS with 21 kills, while Breitweiser and Regina Mullen added 13 apiece. Frappier, who had 80 attack attempts on the day, was the only Sagehen in double figures in kills as Ellen Yamasaki was second with eight. Freshman Jessica Finn had 27 assists, and junior Michelle Schultz led the defense with 21 digs, followed by Frappier with 15.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Tuesday night when it hosts Redlands for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
