La Verne, Calif. - Trailing the whole match, the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team had a chance to force overtime but La Verne goalie Christian Ortiz made a point blank save on a breakaway with one second left to give the Leopards a 10-9 win in a non-league match at the Inland Empire Classic. 

Pomona-Pitzer also fell 17-10 in its first match of the day against Air Force, as it slips to 0-4 on the year. 

After trailing by as many as four goals in the second half against La Verne (9-5), sophomore James Baker scored twice in the final minutes to pull the Sagehens within 9-8 the first time and 10-9 the second time with 35 seconds left.

La Verne was nearly able to run out the clock, but as the shot clock expired, the Leopards were unable to dump the ball into the corner and the Sagehens sent a counter in the other direction, resulting in a one on one with the goalie, but Ortiz came up with the save of the match to preserve the one-goal win.

Baker and junior Phillip Clayman each had three goals in the match, while Stephen Vint, Timmy Hardman and Mark Hallman each had one. Against Air Force, Baker, Vint and Clayman each had two goals, while Hardman, Austin Strong and Travis Larsen added one apiece.

Sophomore goalie Ethan Caleb Prater-Fahey added a rare goal in the Air Force loss, scoring when his long pass in the second quarter sailed over the head of both Vint and the Falcons goalie and into the net. Prater-Fahey had 16 saves against the Falcons, and added nine against La Verne.  

The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow to take on No. 1 Stanford at Redlands at 10:20 a.m., followed by Concordia in the afternoon.
