Sagehens Split On Day Two Of Pacific Coast Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team bounced back from a tough 3-2 loss to Whitworth in its first match of the day to sweep Wheaton (Ill.) 3-0 and earn a split on day two of the Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the split, the Sagehens move to 3-1 on the season, while Whitworth improves to 2-2 and Wheaton falls to 1-3. Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-17 in the Wheaton win, and 21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 14-25, 8-15 in the loss to Whitworth.

Senior Ellen Yamasaki (pictured) had double-doubles in both matches, tallying identical lines of 11 kills and 12 digs against Whitworth and Wheaton. She had 11 kills in 22 attempts in the second match for a .364 hitting percentage. Senior Allie Frappier also had double-doubles in both with 13 kills and 14 digs against Whitworth and 15 kills and 14 digs in the nightcap, while hitting .393.

Frappier, a first-team AVCA All-American in 2013, was nursing an injury, though, and did not play in the fifth and decisive set. She was pulled from the first and fourth sets as well before they were completed, both of which the Pirates won.

Freshman Kate Porter helped keep Pomona-Pitzer in it during the fifth set in Frappier's absence with kills on each of the Sagehens first three points, pulling her team within 5-3 after Whitworth started out on a 3-0 run. A kill from sophomore Kelli Derrah brought Pomona-Pitzer within 11-8, and the Pirates then won a key point as Brenna Bruil went for a tip kill and the ball rolled along the edge of the tape before falling over on Pomona-Pitzer's side to make the score 12-8. That started a 4-0 closing run as the Pirates were able to take the final set 15-8.

In the Wheaton match, the Thunder stayed close for the first two sets before Pomona-Pitzer was able to make late runs to gain separation. Yamasaki sealed each of the first two sets with kills, and the Sagehens were able to use a 10-1 run in the third set to turn a 7-7 tie into a 17-8 lead. After Wheaton broke the first 5-0 run, the Sagehens earned a side out and sophomore Natalie Lindeman won the next four points on her serve, the first on an ace. The Thunder got back within 22-17, but senior Samantha Cahill had a kill and then combined on a block with Stephanie Sun on match point.

Junior libero Michelle Schultz had a strong day defensively with 24 digs in the opening match against Whitworth and 21 in the three-set win over Wheaton. Senior Kirea Mazzolini had six blocks to give her 17 in the first four matches of the season, and also added three unassisted kills in the third set against Wheaton as she took advantage of Thunder overpasses.

Frappier was one of 10 players who were chosen to the All-Tournament team in a vote of the participating coaches. The complete All-Tournament team is as follows:
