Claremont, Calif. - The University of Chicago Women's Soccer team scored twice in the first 10 minutes and held on for a 2-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the season opener for both teams on Friday.  

Freshman Abby Onderwyzer Gold (pictured) scored in the second half for the Sagehens in her collegiate debut, breaking through the Chicago defense after a through ball from sophomore Danika Bethune.

The Sagehens had several chances at the equalizer, as senior Nicole Quilliam was denied inside the box on a diving save from Jacinda Reid, while freshman Sofia Barsher hit the post from 30 yards out on a free kick in the 82nd minute. The Maroons settled in, though, after that near miss and denied the Sagehens a quality chance late as they held on.  

Julia Ozello scored the first goal at the 5:11 mark when she got to a loose ball inside the six-yard box after sophomore goalie Corey Goelz made a diving save on an initial shot from Anna Goddi. Meghan Derken then made it 2-0 just 4:20 later when she one-time a shot from 12 yards out off a pass from Sara Kwan. 

The Sagehens finished with a 13-8 edge in shots, including 7-0 in the second half as Chicago sat back to protect their lead in hot temperatures that were well above 90 at kickoff. Barsher led the Sagehens with three shots, including the one off the post. 

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Sunday to take on Pacific (Ore.) at 9 a.m. at Cal Lutheran.
