Santa Barbara, Calif. - Sophomore Voja Maric broke a 1-1 tie with his second goal of the game early in the second half to give the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team a 2-1 win over Westmont in the season opener on Friday afternoon. 

Maric scored exactly 10 minutes into the second half, just 1:35 after Westmont had tied the score on a 40-yard shot from Tanner Wolf. Sophomore Felipe Galvis (pictured) got to a loose ball in the box and played it forward, where Maric was able to bang it home from 10 yards out. The Sagehens then were able to pack it in and hold on the rest of the way, with freshman goalie Ben Mitchell sealing the win with a save with just under two minutes left.

Maric, the leading scorer for Pomona-Pitzer a year ago (seven goals) put the Sagehens in front 1-0 off a pass from senior midfielder Drew Lind in the 16th minute, which held up until Westmont scored the tying goal early in the second half. 

Senior goalie Nigel Brady had four first half saves and did not allow a goal, while Mitchell had three saves in relief. Westmont finished with a 22-9 edge in total shots,including an 8-1 advantage after Pomona-Pitzer took the 2-1 lead and sat back to protect their one-goal advantage. 

The Sagehens will be back in action at home on Sunday at 5 p.m., when they host UC Santa Cruz.
