Box Score Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran Volleyball team, ranked No. 3 in the nation, defeated Pomona-Pitzer 3-0 in the semifinals of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament on Thursday evening.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-19, 25-14 as the top-seeded Regals improve to 27-2 and move on to take second-seeded CMS in Thursday's finals. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 19-10 with the loss.
Senior Ellen Yamasaki (pictured) had a big day for the Sagehens with 14 kills and 14 digs, while senior Allie Frappier added 12. Michelle Lawrence had 14 kills for Cal Lutheran, Allie Eason added 12 and Sarah Pappas chipped in with 10.
The first set was the closest, as Pomona-Pitzer held a three-point lead on three occassions (15-12, 16-13, 17-14). The Regals, though, came back to tie it 17-17 and after a Frappier kill knotted the score at 21-21, Cal Lutheran scored the final four points of the set.
The second set saw the Regals build an 8-4 lead and kept it between 2-6 points the rest of the way as Pomona-Pitzer was unable to sustain a run. The Sagehens won the first point of the third set, but Cal Lutheran went on an 11-0 run to take control at 11-1 and cruised to the 25-14 win.
The Sagehens received an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament a year ago, when the SCIAC sent three teams and will hope for similar good news this season. Cal Lutheran and CMS are both locks to receive bids regardless of who gets the automatic bid on Saturday, while La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer will both be in contention as well.
