Occidental Edges Sagehens In Season Finale

Redlands, Calif. - Matt Weiser scored the game-winning goal with 2:36 left in regulation as the Occidental Men's Water Polo team edged Pomona-Pitzer 8-7 in the seventh place match of the SCIAC Championship on Sunday morning.

Neither team had a two-goal lead in the entire match, which was tied 5-5 at the half and 6-6 after three quarters. Senior Stephen Vint (pictured) had two goals and fellow seniors Kyle Van der Linde and Travis Larsen also scored in their final collegiate matches.

After Occidental took a 7-6 lead early in the fourth quarter, junior Neil Forsythe answered back on the next possession. Neither team scored for the next three minutes, until Weiser broke the tie with what proved to be the game-winner.

Weiser also gave Occidental some momentum with a goal with four seconds left in the half to tie the score 5-5, after Junior Phillip Clayman had given the Sagehens the lead with 45 seconds left.

Pomona-Pitzer closes out the 2014 season with an 8-19 overall record and a 4-7 mark in the SCIAC.
