Second Half Surge Leads CMS Past Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The CMS Men's Water Polo team went on a 5-0 run in the second half to come from behind and take a 12-9 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday evening at Axelrood Pool.

The loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Sagehens, who fall to 8-15 overall and 4-3 in the SCIAC with the loss. CMS closes out the regular season portion of its SCIAC schedule with a 7-1 mark, securing the second seed in the conference tournament (next week at Redlands).

Pomona-Pitzer took a 7-6 lead into halftime after a close opening stanza in which CMS never led. Sophomore Nic Lanker (pictured) scored to start the second half and give the Sagehens an 8-6 lead, its second two-goal lead of the night.

However, CMS scored on 6-on-5 advantages on its next two possessions and then took the lead for good on a penalty shot. The Stags added a goal just before the buzzer to end the third quarter and then scored on the first possession of the fourth to cap off the 5-0 run and take an 11-8 lead. Pomona-Pitzer closed to 11-9 and had several chances to cut the lead even further, but CMS finally added an insurance goal to put the game away.

Sophomore Tommy Turner got the Sagehens started with two first quarter goals. Senior Stephen Vint added two goals and two assists in the first half, with his second goal making the score 7-5 late in the second quarter.

Pomona-Pitzer closes out the regular season with a road match at Cal Lutheran on Saturday, and will then compete in the SCIAC Tournament, beginning on Friday, Nov. 21 at Redlands.
