Box Score Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team honored its five seniors before the match and came out with its best performance of the season, sweeping La Verne 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
With the win, the Sagehens conclude the regular season 19-9 overall and 11-5 in the SCIAC, while La Verne slips to 20-5 overall and 12-4 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Senior All-American outside hitter Allie Frappier (pictured) had 21 kills in three sets to lead the way, while fellow senior Ellen Yamasaki was also in double figures with 10 kills in 22 attempts for a .364 hitting percentage. Senior Kirea Mazzolini had six kills in eight attempts (.750) while senior Samantha Cahill added four in 10 attempts (.400) to go along with four blocks. Senior setter Dani Kritter did not play due to injury.
The Sagehens pulled out a tight first set that was tied 22-22 by taking the final three points, with Mazzolini and Frappier kills ending the set 25-22. The second set saw Pomona-Pitzer go on a timely 7-0 run to turn an 18-17 deficit into a 24-18 lead and took the set 25-19 on a Yamasaki kill.
The final set, fittingly, ended with a Frappier kill, her 21st of the day as the Sagehens completed the 3-0 sweep. Michelle Schultz led the defense with 16 digs, followed by Frappier with 12. Freshman Jessica Finn had 25 assists.
Pomona-Pitzer will be the fourth seed in next week's SCIAC Tournament and will open up against top-seeded Cal Lutheran on Thursday in one of two semifinals. La Verne and CMS will meet in the other.
