Box Score Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team took No. 2 Cal Lutheran to the wire in the third set before the Regals were able to earn back-to-back kills with the score tied 24-24 and take a 3-0 win over the Sagehens on Friday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
With the 25-14, 25-16, 26-24 win, Cal Lutheran improves to 20-1 overall and 9-0 in the SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer sees its record slip to 14-8 overall and 6-4 in league play.
Senior All-American Allie Frappier (pictured - photo courtesy d3photography) had a terrific effort for the Sagehens, tallying 19 kills in 41 attempts, including seven kills in the third set, the last of which tied the score 24-24, fighting off a match point. However, Dianna Rohrer answered with a tip kill over the Pomona-Pitzer blocks and Michelle Lawrence finished it off with a kill that just eluded the dig attempt of junior libero Michelle Schultz (13 digs).
Cal Lutheran received good balance from its lineup, as Lawrence led with 12 kills, Allie Eason had 11, Sarah Pappas had eight, Rohrer had seven and Pua Mo'okini-Oliveira had six. Senior Ellen Yamasaki was second on the Sagehens with six kills.
The first set featured a lot of long rallies as Cal Lutheran had 45 attack attempts and the Sagehens had 41. The second set saw those numbers drop to 27 attack attempts for the Regals (who had 17 kills and only one error for a .593 hitting percentage) and 24 attempts for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens return to action on Tuesday for a road match at Occidental, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
