Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore middle hitter Sarah Gamble (pictured) had seven kills in 12 attempts in her first career start to help the Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Redlands on Tuesday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 as Pomona-Pitzer improves to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the SCIAC. Redlands sees its record fall to 1-10 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Senior Allie Frappier had a match-high 10 kills in 17 attempts for the Sagehens, while sophomore Kelli Derrah had eight, Gamble and senior Kirea Mazzolini had seven, and senior Ellen Yamasaki had six in a balanced attack.
The first set was close before the Sagehens used a late run to turn a 17-17 tie into a 25-19 win. Junior libero Michelle Schultz ended the set with one of Pomona-Pitzer's 10 aces on the day.
The Sagehens were never seriously threatened in the second two sets. Mazzolini had three straight kills late in the second set to push Pomona-Pitzer's lead to 23-17 and Gamble ended the set 25-20 on a tip kill. Redlands fought off four match points in the third set to close to 24-21, but Frappier ended the match with a back row kill to seal it.
Freshman setter Jessica Finn had 19 assists and sophomore setter Elizabeth Sun had 17. Frappier had a team-high 11 digs for a double-double, while Finn and Schultz each had three service aces.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Friday for a road match against Chapman at 7:30 before hosting Caltech on Saturday at 6 p.m.
