Late Run Pushes Sagehens Past Caltech

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team closed out the game on a 16-2 run as it came back for a 68-62 win over Caltech on Thursday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Sophomore forward Jenn Okonkwo had 18 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:36 left, to go along with six steals for Pomona-Pitzer, which improves to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in the SCIAC with the win. Caltech falls to 1-16 overall and 0-8 in the SCIAC with the narrow loss.

The Sagehens trailed 60-52 with 6:52 to play on a jumper from Grace Leishman. Okonkwo, though hit two foul shots on the next possession, and the score froze at 60-54, until junior guard Ruthie Shapiro (pictured) hit a big three-pointer with 4:29 left to cut the lead to 60-57.

Shapiro then fed sophomore forward Amelia Hummel for a short jumper off an inbounds pass with 3:49 left, then passed out to freshman guard Alaina Woo for a three-pointer to put Pomona-Pitzer in front 62-60, its first lead since 37-36 with 19 minutes left.

Bridget Connor answered with a 15-footer with 2:41 to go to tie the score, and the Beavers had a chance to take the lead, but Okonkwo blocked a shot from Kate Lewis and grabbed the rebound. She then gave her team the lead with a short jumper in the paint off a post feed from Hummel to make the score 64-62 with 1:36 to go.

Shapiro then made another big play as she stole the ball out on the perimeter with just over a minute to go, then led a fast break before finding Hummel for a lay-up to put the Sagehens ahead 66-62. Okonkwo then helped seal the game with two steals in the final minute as the Beavers were unable to score in the final 2:41.

Woo finished with 14 points, including 3-6 shooting from behind the arc, for Pomona-Pitzer, while Hummel had 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Sophomore forward Alice Timken contributed seven points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Shapiro had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists. Connor led Caltech with 17 points, while Stephanie Wong nearly had a triple-double with 10 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Saturday when it hosts La Verne for a 7 p.m. contest, the second half of a doubleheader with the men's team, which plays La Verne at 5 p.m.
