Westwood, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team opened its 2013 season with a pair of tough matches, falling 17-4 to No. 2 UCLA and 17-7 to No. 7 UC Santa Barbara at the UCLA Invitational on Saturday.
In the UC Santa Barbara match, junior Clayton Hardman (pictured) and freshman James Baker led the Sagehens with two goals apiece. Junior Stephen Vint, and sophomores Neil Forsythe and Phillip Clayman also added a goal.
Freshman Caleb Prater-Fahey had seven saves for the Sagehens in goal in one half of action to pace the team's defense. Derek Shoemaker and Bryce Miller each had six goals for the Gauchos.
UCLA had a more balanced offense in the first match of the day, with five different players scoring two goals apiece to lead the way. The Sagehens were within 9-3 at the half, but UCLA used a 5-0 third quarter to break it open. Vint and Clayman added goals in that game as well, while seniors Jarrod Gaut and Ryan Higgins also scored.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend at the Inland Empire Tournament, when it will host No. 11 UC San Diego and No. 1 USC on Saturday.
