Box Score 2 Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team swept Caltech 3-0 in its first match before falling 3-2 to Occidental in the nightcap of two home matches at Voelkel Gymnasium on Saturday.
Pomona-Pitzer moves to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the SCIAC with the split. Caltech slips to 0-9 overall and 0-7 in the SCIAC, while Occidental improves to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in league play.
The Sagehens rolled to 25-8, 25-10, 25-15 win over Caltech by hitting .395 as a team. Freshman Stephanie Sun led the way with nine kills, while Allie Frappier, the nation's leading hitter in kills per set, had five in eight attempts in the first set before sitting out the rest of both matches.
The nightcap saw plenty of drama as Occidental came away with a 25-23, 24-26, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11 win, closing out the fifth game on a 4-0 run after the game was tied 11-11. Pomona-Pitzer was also down 24-22 in the second game, after already trailing 1-0, but rallied for the final four points, including an ace from senior libero Beth Smilkstein (pictured) to fight off the second match point.
The Sagehens then went ahead 2-1 with a convincing 25-20 win in the third game, which was 24-16 before a relatively harmless 4-0 Occidental run. The Tigers, though, got back in it with the final two points of the fourth game with the score tied 23-23.
Without Frappier, who has had 32 kills in a match three times this season, the Sagehens had to rely on a more balanced offense with Michelle Schultz leading the way with 11 kills and Samantha Cahill adding nine with only one error in 22 attempts. Smilkstein had 27 digs and Schultz added 20 on defense. Occidental was led by Dana Michels with 27 kills, Tiareh Cruz with 51 assists and Madyson Cassidy with 36 digs.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Tuesday for a road match at CMS, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
