Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Junior midfielder Nicole Quilliam (pictured) scored two first-half goals 1:07 apart and then assisted on the clinching goal in the 84th minute as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Chapman 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-1-1 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC. The Panthers fall to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the SCIAC with the loss. Freshman forward Danika Bethune scored twice in the final seven minutes to put the game away, the first off a feed from Quilliam.
Both of Quilliam's goals were set up by free kicks. On the first one, senior defender Ari Sanchez took a free kick just over midfield and sent a ball into the middle of the penalty area. Quilliam got to the ball first and jumped in a crowd, re-directing the ball inside the right post at the 25:35 mark.
Just 1:07 later, Chapman was called for a foul just outside the left corner of the penalty area. Senior forward Allie Tao took a shot that she bent past the wall and on target. Chapman goalie Marissa Fehrman dove to make the stop, but Quilliam was the first to the loose ball in front and tapped it into the empty net at the 26:42 mark.
Chapman cut the lead in half early in the second half on a corner kick, as Jordan Royer took the kick and found Val Sobol in front of the net, and she was able to re-direct the ball in to make the score 2-1 just 8:43 into the second stanza.
Freshman goalie Corey Goelz held the fort with four second-half saves (of the five she finished with) to keep the score 2-1, until Qulliam was able to complete her five-point night with a pass to Bethune with 6:12 left in the game to make the score 3-1. Bethune added a blast from just outside the box with 1:02 left to make the final score 4-1.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Whittier for a 7 p.m. game.
