Box Score Claremont, Calif. - After a scoreless first half, Pomona-Pitzer outshout Occidental 10-1 in the second half, but the lone Occidental shot went in as the Tigers captured a 1-0 win on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Stadium.
The Sagehens suffer their first loss of the season as they fall to 3-1-1 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play. Occidental improves to 3-1-1 and 2-0 in the conference with the win.
The game-winner was scored just over 10 minutes into the second half as Elissa Minamishin struck a blast from five yards outside the box after a quick give and go with Julie Khil that knuckled past Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Corey Goelz and under the crossbar.
The goal brought the Sagehens to life, as they responded with several quality chances, but Occidental goalkeeper Tayler Renshaw stopped junior midfielder Nicole Quilliam (pictured) inside the six-yard box, then came off her line to smother a shot from freshman forward Danika Bethune. Quilliam then played senior forward Allie Tao in behind the defense, but Renshaw came off her line to stop Tao's shot off a breakaway.
Junior midfielder Amanda Coba missed just wide from 23 yards out with 10 minutes to go, and Renshaw again stopped Quilliam from the top of the six with five minutes to play. With the final 10 seconds counting off the clock, Quilliam flicked a pass to play Tao into the box which appeared dangerous, but Renshaw sprinted off her line to smother the ball before Tao could get to it, sealing the win.
Pomona-Pitzer outshot Occidental 15-6 on the day, after the teams both took five shots in the first half, with a header from sophomore defender Taylor Fortson hitting the crossbar for the Sagehens in the best chance for either team. Goelz had one save in the first half, while Renshaw finished with six for the Tigers.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels across the street to face CMS for a 7 p.m. contest.
