Pomona-Pitzer Breaks Into Win Column, Cruises Past Arizona Christian 57-43

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team used a 21-0 run spanning both halves as it captured a 57-43 win at Voelkel Gymnasium on Saturday evening at the David Wells Classic.

Freshman Basha Brulee-Wills led the way for Pomona-Pitzer with 17 points, as the Sagehens picked up their first win of the season to improve to 1-4 on the year. Arizona Christian, which took CMS down to the wire on the first day of the David Wells Classic on Friday, falls to 2-5 with the loss.

The Sagehens got strong contibutions from a number of players, including junior Ruthie Shapiro (pictured), who missed the first three games of the season with an injury. Shapiro provided veteran stability with 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals to go along with four points. Forwards Amelia Hummel (nine points, six rebounds, four assists) and Alice Timken (eight points, seven rebounds, four assists) provided well-balanced stat lines as well.

Arizona Christian got off to a quick start, leading 13-5 seven minutes into the game on a layup from Prayer Branham. However, the Sagehens clamped down on defense and held the Firestorm to only seven points for the rest of the half, using a 29-7 run to take a 34-20 lead into intermission.

In fact, after a Shannon Harte jumper gave Arizona Christian a 20-17 lead with 5:13 left in the opening stanza, the Sagehens went on a 21-0 run over both halves, ending the first half on a 17-0 run and scoring the first four points of the second half. Freshman guard Alaina Woo started the run with back-to-back three-pointers to give Pomona-Pitzer the lead for good at 23-20 with 3:04 left in the half. Brulee-Wills and Timken then had four points each in the final three minutes, with Timken's putback giving the Sagehens a 34-20 lead at the break.

Prayer ended the 21-0 run with a jump shot with 14:35 left in the game, ending a scoreless streak of 10:28 for the Firestorm and making the score 38-22.  A Harte jumper with 9:16 left made the score 42-32 and put the Sagehens under some pressure, but Brulee-Wills answered with a spinning lay-up to start a 6-0 run to put the game away.

The Sagehens finished with a 45-34 rebounding edge and held Arizona Christian to just 28.1 percent shooting from the floor. Branham led Arizona Christian with 13 points and Harte added 12, but the duo shot just 9-31 combined.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action when it opens SCIAC play at home on Thursday night against Cal Lutheran, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
