Sagehens Fall to UC Santa Cruz

Claremont, Calif. - Sarah Mackey had 19 points on 9-11 shooting to lead the UC Santa Cruz Women's Basketball team to a 90-41 win over Pomona-Pitzer on the first day of the David Wells Classic on Friday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

With the win UC Santa Cruz improves to 4-2 on the year, while the Sagehens slip to 0-4 on the young season with the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer was led by 17 points and 13 rebounds from freshman forward Basha Brulee-Wills (pictured), who picked up her third double-double in her first four collegiate games (while just missing in the other one with 15 points and nine rebounds against Whitman).

The Sagehens played without leading scorer Jenn Okonkwo, who is averaging 17 points and 12 rebounds through her first three contests. Freshman guard Kacie Hitomi was the second-leading scorer for Pomona-Pitzer with eight points on 4-8 shooting. UC Santa Cruz placed four players in double figures.

The second day of the David Wells Classic will see the women's action move to Pomona-Pitzer's Voelkel Gymnasium, as the Sagehens will face Arizona Christian at 7 p.m., following the first game between UC Santa Cruz and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
