Box Score Pasadena, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team picked up its 20th win of the season as it defeated Caltech 3-0 on the road on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Sarah Gamble led the Sagehens in kills with nine, as Pomona-Pitzer rested several of its key players to get ready for next weekend's SCIAC Tournament.
Pomona-Pitzer will be the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC, which will be held at Cal Lutheran on Thursday, and will face No. 3 CMS at 5 p.m., while the host Regals will play Chapman in the second semifinal. The highest remaining seed of the two semifinal winners will host the championship match on Saturday.
Game scores were 25-18, 25-12, 25-12 as Pomona-Pitzer withstood a strong challenge from Caltech (2-18, 0-16 SCIAC) in the first set before settling in and winning the second and third sets more comfortably.
Freshman Stephanie Sun had five kills in 12 attempts for the Sagehens, while twin sister Elizabeth Sun (pictured) led in assists with 14. Senior Nicole Bauthier had a team-high nine digs, and Gamble and sophomore Emma Burdekin tied for team-high honors with three blocks. Caltech was led by Paige Logan with eight kills.
Pomona-Pitzer swept the regular season series from CMS, winning 27-25, 26-24, 25-23 on the road and in a four-setter at home, with the fifth set going to 35-33 before a winner was decided.
