Redlands Clinches SCIAC Title With Win Over Sagehens

Box Score

Redlands, Calif. – Kevin Russell threw four touchdown passes as the Redlands Football team remained perfect in the SCIAC with a 49-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening at Ted Runner Stadium.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 6-2 overall and 6-0 in SCIAC play, clinching at least a share of the league title. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Curran Fudge opened the game with a 68-yard kickoff return to give Redlands the ball on the Pomona-Pitzer 17-yard line. Russell completed an eight-yard pass to Bobby Brown, and then Brown carried three straight times to finish off the drive, ending it with a three-yard touchdown run less than two minutes into th egame.

Russell threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Steven Herber on the second possession for the Bulldogs at the 8:39 mark, and after a Sagehen fumble on their own 45-yard line, Brown scored again from one-yard out after Russell threw a 34-yard pass to Herber to set it up.

After Redlands went ahead 28-0 in the second quarter on another Russell TD pass, this time to Aaron Atkins, Pomona-Pitzer had its best drive of the half, getting all the way to the doorstep before turning it over on downs. Freshman running back Kyle Lee (pictured) had a couple of long runs to get into Redlands territory, and after a pair of Bulldog penalties, an Alex Bresler five-yard scramble put the ball on the 3-yard line on fourth down.

A completion to open sophomore wide receiver Jack Pietrykowski in the right flat appeared to be on its way to a touchdown, but Redlands defensive back Stephen Reyes flew out of the end zone to tackle him inside the one-yard line to turn it over on downs.

Reyes started the second half with an interception to set up Russell's third touchdown pass from 24 yards out to Herber. A 36-yard pass from Russell to Atkins made it 42-0, and Fudge picked off another pass and returned it all the way for a 31-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 49-0 with 2:02 left in the third quarter.

Senior linebacker Kyle Roskamp had a big day on defense for the Sagehens with 13 tackles (eight solo), a sack and a fumble recovery, while sophomore safety Nelson Cole added 10 tackles. Lee had 73 yards rushing on 15 carries in his first game as the primary running back for the Sagehens. Russell finished 14-of-20 passing for 234 yards and four touchdowns for Redlands.

Pomona-Pitzer will conclude the 2013 season when it travels to CMS next weekend for the annual Sixth Street Rivalry game.
