Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Missing two starters, the Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team turned to its freshman class for a 3-1 win over Redlands on Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Game scores were 25-19, 25-13, 19-25, 25-23 as the Sagehens improve to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the SCIAC with the win. Redlands slips to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in league play.
Freshman hitter Stephanie Sun led the way for Pomona-Pitzer with 17 kills, and freshman middle hitter Kelli Derrah (pictured) added 12. Freshman setter Elizabeth Sun also keyed the offense with 22 assists, while junior Dani Kritter added 19.
Pomona-Pitzer was missing junior outside hitter Allie Frappier, who is leading the nation in kills per set (5.69) and was coming off a 27-kill performance in a 3-0 win over CMS on Tuesday, while junior middle hitter Kirea Mazzolini also sat the match out with an injury.
It appeared that the Sagehens would have no trouble as it cruised to wins in the first two sets, but Redlands pulled away late in the third game to take a 25-19 and stay in the match. Redlands took a 23-22 lead in the fourth game looking to take it to a fifth, but junior Ellen Yamasaki had a key kill to tie it, and after a Redlands error, Kritter and senior libero Beth Smilkstein had big digs to keep match point alive, and a Redlands attack on an overpass went just out for the final point.
Ashton Martin led Redlands with 12 kills, while Marisa Gile and Morgan Buckner had 11 apiece. Smilkstein had 23 digs to lead the Sagehen defense, while junior Samantha Cahill had five blocks (one solo, four assisted).
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action tomorrow for a 1 p.m. road match at Chapman.
