Frappier Breaks School Kills Record As Sagehens Win Marathon With CMS

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - Junior Allie Frappier (pictured) had 40 kills to set a new Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball record, including the clincher at 35-33 in the fourth game, as the Sagehens defeated No. 23 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3-1 in a marathon match on Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Game scores were 20-25, 26-24, 25-13, 35-33 as the Sagehens twice needed to go into extra points in order to win games. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 17-7 overall and 9-4 in the SCIAC, passing CMS, which falls to 21-5 overall and 9-5 in conference play.

Frappier had six kills in the first game, nine in the second, 11 in the third and 14 in the fourth on her way to breaking the school mark of 35 kills set by Joanne Nielson in 1990. Frappier had challenged that record several times this year, tallying 32 on four different occasions.

The 40-kill total also ties for the sixth-highest total in NCAA Division III history for a four-set match. The four-set record of 47 was set by Sarah Mosher of Rockford in 2003.

The Sagehens trailed 23-21 in the second set, after dropping the first, but responded with a 5-1 run to swing the momentum of the match. Kirea Mazzolini and Kelli Derrah combined on a block to start the run, and Mazzolini followed with a solo block to even the score. An Ellen Yamasaki ace gave the Sagehens a 24-23 lead before CMS fought off that set point on a Regina Mullen kill. However, Mazzolini and Yamasaki finished off the game with a block for a 26-24 win.

After cruising in the third set, the fourth set featured some spectacular back-and-forth action, mostly between Frappier and Audrey Breitweiser of the Athenas. A Frappier kill gave the Sagehens a 24-23 lead and a match point, which was answered by Breitweiser. Michelle Schultz fought off a CMS set point at 27-26 with a kill, and Samantha Cahill fought one off at 28-27.

A kill by Breitweiser gave the Athenas a 30-29 lead, but Frappier answered back with a kill to once again tie it up. Breitweiser had an attack blocked by Frappier and Mazzolini to create another match point, but she came right back with two straight kills to give CMS a 32-31 lead. Frappier, though, answered back with another kill, and a Mazzolini/Yamasaki block gave Pomona-Pitzer a 33-32 lead. Breitweiser answered one last time, but Mazzolini had a kill, and Frappier ripped her 40th kill down the middle for the final point of the match.

Freshman Elizabeth Sun had 32 assists and junior Dani Kritter added 24 for the Sagehens. Schultz had 18 digs, while Frappier and senior libero Beth Smilkstein added 17. Mazzolini contributed to nine blocks (one solo, eight assists), while Cahill had eight kills in 13 attempts for a .615 percentage. Breitweiser had 23 kills and 11 digs for CMS.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Redlands, before closing out the regular season at home against Chapman on Friday and at Caltech on Saturday. The Sagehens are virtually assured of a SCIAC Tournament berth, which will be held on Nov. 7 and 9.
