Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Katie Tao (pictured) scored on a 40-yard blast in the final minute of the first half, and Julia Dohner added the eventual game-winner in the second half as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team picked up a big 2-1 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.
The win enables the Sagehens to reach the 10-win plateau (10-2-1), one shy of the school record for wins in a season and raises their record to 8-2 in the SCIAC. leaving them one win shy of clinching a SCIAC berth. CMS falls to 5-7-3 overall and 4-4-2 in league.
The game appeared ready to go into halftime tied 0-0, but Tao let loose with a blast from way outside the box off a pass from senior Sara Ach that found the back of the net with just 22 seconds remaining in the opening half. The 1-0 lead held until the 77th minute, when Tao had a shot saved by CMS goalie Molly Freed, but Dohner got to the loose ball in the middle of the box and scored to put the Sagehens ahead 2-0.
That goal would prove to be pivotal, as CMS answered right back less than 40 minutes later on a rebound goal of its own, with Isabel Lester scoring the goal with 9:41 showing on the clock after Corey Goelz made the save on a shot from Makella Brems. The Athenas had too more shots in the final minutes, but both were off target as the Sagehens captured the win.
Pomona-Pitzer also swept the season series from CMS with the victory, after winning the first meeting 2-1 in overtime.
The Sagehens will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Chapman for a 4 p.m. contest.
