Sagehens Stretch Win Streak To Five, Sweep Whittier

Box Score

Whittier, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team extended its winning streak to five matches by cruising to a 3-0 road win over Whittier on Friday evening.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 14-6 overall and 7-3 in the SCIAC, setting up a big match tomorrow evening with third-ranked Cal Lutheran at Voelkel Gymnasium. Whittier slips to 4-6 in conference play with the loss.

Game scores were 25-17, 25-20 and 25-16 as the Sagehens were never seriously threatened in any of the three games. The second game was tied 20-20, but junior middle hitter Samantha Cahill (pictured) broke the tie with a kill, and the Poets had four straight attacking errors to end the game 25-20.

Junior Allie Frappier, the nation's leader in kills, had a relatively quiet day with 16 kills in 43 attempts, but didn't need to be at her best as the Sagehen defense held Whittier to just an .058 hitting percentage (35 kills and 27 errors). Senior libero Beth Smilkstein had 24 digs defensively and Frappier added 12, while Cahill led with five blocks.

Pomona-Pitzer hosts Rose-Hulman in a non-conference match at 12 noon, and then faces Cal Lutheran at 6 p.m. The Sagehens nearly knocked off the Regals, who are undefeated this year against Division III opponents, in Thousand Oaks on Sept. 24, leading by three points in the decisive fifth game, before Cal Lutheran came from behind for a 15-13 win.
