Christiansen Carries La Verne Past Sagehens

Box Score

La Verne, Calif. – Boye Christiansen scored two first-half goals two minutes part and assisted on the game-winner in overtime from Saul Uribe as the La Verne Men's Soccer team defeated Pomona-Pitzer 3-2 on Monday evening.

With the win, La Verne improves to 8-5 overall on the season and 6-5 in the SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer slips to 5-9-1 overall and 4-6-1 in league play.

The game-winner came on a counter as Christiansen got the ball near midfield. He found a seam in the Sagehen defense and slipped a through ball to a cutting Uribe. After dribbling into the box with a 2-on-1, Uribe paused and froze the last Pomona-Pitzer defender, before slipping a high shot into the net for the game-winner at the 96:07 mark.

The Sagehens trailed 2-1 at the half, after falling behind 2-0 early on the two Christiansen goals, but junior midfielder Nathan Shekita (pictured) pulled Pomona-Pitzer level with a goal on a counter off a pass from fellow junior Arash Mahboubi just 6:43 into the second stanza.

Christiansen struck for his first goal 14:15 into the game when he converted a rebound after Pomona-Pitzer goalie Nigel Brady saved the initial offering from the Leopards. Just 2:11 later, the Sagehens were called for a foul outside the top of the box, and Christiansen struck the kick past Brady at the 16:26 mark to give the Leopards a quick 2-0 lead.

The two-goal deficit didn't last long, as Pomona-Pitzer scored less than two minutes later to bring the score back within 2-1. Junior forward Lawrence McDonald settled a ball 15 yards from goal straight out, and hit a low shot into the left side of the net to make the score 2-1 at the 18:21 mark of the first half.

Brady had eight saves for the Sagehens, including a big one in the final minute of regulation when he came off his line to thwart a dangerous La Verne chance. Dylan Roberts had two saves for La Verne.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to CMS for a 1 p.m. contest.
