Irvine, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team concluded its weekend against the nation's top competition, falling to No. 13 UC San Diego 15-4 and No. 15 Santa Clara on Sunday at the UC Irvine Invitational.

On Saturday, the Sagehens faced No. 1 UCLA and No. 8 Pepperdine, giving them four ranked opponents this weekend and 13 so far this season (nine of which have been top 10). Pomona-Pitzer is 3-16 overall on the year, but 0-13 against the top 20.

Senior Robert Chew (pictured) scored his first goal of the year against UC San Diego, while senior Jarrod Gaut, junior Stephen Vint and sophomore Phillip Clayman also added goals. Senior Tyler Hill and junior Austin Strong split the time in goal and had four saves apiece.

The Tritons led 8-0 early in the third quarter, before the Sagehens scored three of the next four goals, capped off by a Chew extra-man goal to close within 9-3. Tommy Friedrich led UC San Diego with five goals.

Pomona-Pitzer was tied with Santa Clara 3-3 after the first quarter before the Broncos edged out in front 7-4 at the half and took a 10-5 lead after three quarters. The Sagehens added two more goals in the fourth, but ended up falling 11-7.

Gaut and fellow senior Ryan Higgins each had three goals for the Sagehens, while Vint added one as well. Caleb Prater-Fahey had four saves in the first half, and Hill added four in the second.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action when it opens SCIAC play on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. home match against Cal Lutheran at Haldeman Pool.
