La Verne, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team fell 12-9 to Concordia (Calif.) and 15-4 to Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon at the Inland Empire Tournament.
The losses drop the Sagehens to 0-4 on the young season, after falling to the top two teams in the nation (USC and UCLA) last weekend.
Senior Mark Hudnall (pictured - photo by Becky Gaut) scored four goals against Concordia and added a fifth in the loss to Long Beach State, while Ryan Higgins had three goals in the Concordia defeat.
The Sagehens trailed 10-6 going into the fourth quarter against Concordia and got as close as 10-8 with 5:29 remaining after a pair of Hundall goals. However, the Sagehens missed on four chances to cut the lead to one, and Concordia was able to pick up a pair of insurance goals 32 seconds apart (at the 1:22 and :50 marks) to put the game away.
The Long Beach State match saw the Sagehens start slow as they fell behind 5-0 before Clayton Hardman got them on the board with 1:16 left in the first quarter. A Jarrod Gaut goal in the second quarter made the score 6-2, but the 49ers closed out the half with another 5-0 run and added the first four goals of the second half to seal it.
Freshman Phillip Clayman added goals in each of the two contests for the Sagehens, while Hardman also scred in both games.
Pomona-Pitzer concludes play tomorrow at the Inland Empire Tournament with matches against UC Davis and UC Irvine.
