Sagehens Fall In Four To Cal Lutheran

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team rallied from an 18-12 deficit to win 25-23 in the third game, but Cal Lutheran bounced back for a 3-1 win over the Sagehens on Friday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, Cal Lutheran, an NCAA Elite Eight team from a year ago, improves to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC. The Sagehens fall to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer was in a deep 18-12 hole in the third game, but went on a 7-0 run on the serve of junior Nicole Bauthier (San Rafael, Calif.) to take the lead. With the score tied 21-21, sophomore Samantha Cahill (Vancouver, Wash.) and sophomore Ellen Yamasaki (Salinas, Calif.) had consecutive kills, and Cahill was able to close out the 25-23 win with another kill.

However, Cal Lutheran started off the fourth game with a 5-0 lead, and the Sagehens were never able to crawl out of the hole. Pomona-Pitzer got as close as 11-9 at one point, but the Regals scored the next three points to get the lead back up to five and were able to cruise from there.

Senior libero Lauren Kim (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. - pictured) had a big day defensively with 25 digs for the Sagehens, while Yamasaki had a team-leading 11 kills. Lauren Rohach led the Regals with 12 kills and six blocks.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow when it travels to Chapman for a 7 p.m. contest.
