Box Score Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team scored the final four points in the fifth game after it was tied 11-11 to take a 3-2 win over Whittier on Tuesday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC, while Whittier sees its record fall to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the SCIAC with the loss. Game scores were 16-25, 25-15, 21-25, 25-16, 15-11.
Sophomore middle hitter Samantha Cahill (Vancouver, Wash. - pictured) had a big day offensively and defensively for Pomona-Pitzer, recording 13 kills in 24 attempts with only two errors for a .458 percentage, and adding four blocks.
Whittier scored three straight points to tie the fifth game up 11-11, but the Sagehens called timeout and rattled off the final four points in order to take the win. Sophomore middle hitter Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska) started the run with a tip kill, and then sophomore outside hitter Kirea Mazzolini (Phoenix, Ariz.) followed with a kill after a terrific point-saving dig from sophomore setter Dani Kritter (Culpepper, Va.).
After recording back-to-back kills, Weyhrauch and Mazzolini combined on a pivotal block off of Whittier outside hitter Alyssa Sialaris to bring the Sagehens to match point. Freshman outside hitter Michelle Schultz (Chicago, Ill.) then finished off the Poets with her 12th kill of the match to seal the win.
Sophomore outside hitter Ellen Yamasaki (Salinas, Calif.) finished with a team-high 15 kills and added 17 digs, while senior libero Lauren Kim (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) added a team-high 18 digs and three service aces. Kritter had 43 assists for the Sagehens. Sialaris (23 kills) and Alyssa Rigo (20 kills) each had big days offensively for the Poets, while Torrey Mitsunaga had 51 assists and eight kills off of fake sets.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday when it hosts defending SCIAC champion Cal Lutheran for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
