Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Nicole Rains and Carmen Wheeler came off the bench to score goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half and lead the Cal Lutheran Women's Soccer team to a 2-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday.
The win was the sixth in a row after an opening day loss for the Regals, who improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the SCIAC with the win. The Sagehens fall to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Freshman goalie Annie Wedel (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) had three saves for the Sagehens, including one off a penalty kick in the second half (penalty kick save is pictured) to keep the score 2-0.
The game's first goal was scored by Rains off a corner kick taken by Kristin Cameron. Rains got the first touch on the ball, and it deflected off a pair of players inside the penalty area before coming back to her feet 15 yards away. She had a clean look at goal, and was able to line a shot into the left side of the net past the dive of Wedel with 9:36 left in the first half.
The Sagehens appeared ready to go into halftime down 1-0, but the Regals added a second goal off a goalie punt. Kristin Bailey punted the ball over midfield, and Bailey Marquez flicked a header over the Sagehen defense and into the path of Wheeler, who had a clean breakaway and scored with 1:37 left in the half.
The second half saw Cal Lutheran settle back and protect its lead, as the Sagehens had one quality chance when junior midfielder Allie Tao cut past a Regal defender and had a clean look from just inside the top of the 18-yard box, but her shot bent right to Bailey in net who was able to make the save.
Cal Lutheran finished with a 13-9 edge in shots, although the Sagehens were able to hold a narrow 5-3 advantage in that department in the second half. Corner kicks were 6-6 and both goalies finished with three saves.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday for an 11 a.m. home contest with Wheeler as it looks to get back to .500 in SCIAC play.
