Palo Alto, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team fell 10-8 to No. 14 Santa Clara and 13-12 in overtime to No. 19 Concordia (Calif.) to close out the NorCal Tournament on Sunday.
The losses drop the Sagehens to 0-10 on the year, with all 10 losses coming to teams ranked in the top 20 in the nation (including six in the top 10). The four losses to teams ranked between 11-20 have been by a combined eight goals, including the two today.
Pomona-Pitzer led at the half in both contests today, taking a 5-3 lead into intermission against Santa Clara and a 7-3 lead into the break against Concordia. However, the third quarter proved to be problematic as Santa Clara came back to tie the match 7-7 after three, while Concordia outscored the Sagehens 5-2 to close the gap to 9-8 after three stanzas.
The Sagehens also led Concordia 11-10 after the changeover for the first overtime, but Concordia scored three times in the second extra session to capture the 13-12 win.
Pomona-Pitzer had several players contribute offensively. In the Santa Clara match, three players scored multiple goals, while against Concordia three different players scored multiple times. Against Santa Clara, Cody Moore, Dylan O'Connell and Ryan Higgins each led Pomona-Pitzer with two goals, while in the Concordia match, Jason Cox and Stephen Vint each had three goals, while Mark Hudnall chipped in with two.
Higgins added a goal in the Concordia game to give him three on the day, while Travis Larsen (pictured - photo by Becky Gaut) and Phillip Clayman each scored in both contests for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer will conclude the top-20 portion of its early-season schedule with a road game against Loyola Marymount next Saturday.
