Box Score La Verne, Calif. - The La Verne Volleyball team scored the final six points to take a 25-21 win in the fourth game and capture a 3-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Friday evening.
With the win, the Leopards improve to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCIAC, while the Sagehens fall to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in league play. Game scores were 25-16, 25-18, 19-25, 25-21.
After La Verne pulled away in the first two games, the Sagehens regrouped for a strong third game. Sophomore middle Hannah Wayment-Steele came up big with four kills in the game, while sophomores Samantha Cahill and Dani Kritter combined for back-to-back blocks to held the Sagehens pull away late.
The fourth game was back-and-forth early, and the Sagehens were in strong shape as a kill from freshman Michelle Schultz made the score 21-19. However, La Verne earned a kill of its own, and then turned the ball over to freshman Brittany Yaxley, who used a powerful jump serve to help the Leopards win the final five points.
A Sagehen error attempting to get the serve back across made the score 23-21, and Pomona-Pitzer then dug Yaxley's next serve over the net, straight into a kill for Catie Logan. Kendall Kraiss then finished off the match with a tip kill along the sideline.
Schultz led the Sagehens with nine kills and 18 digs. Cahill had seven kills and six blocks assists, while Randi Taylor-Toomey led all players with 13 kills for the Leopards.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Caltech for another SCIAC match.
