Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team was within three points of first-place Redlands early in the second half, but the Bulldogs allowed only four points over the last 17 minutes to earn a 50-29 win on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, the Bulldogs stay in first place in the SCIAC at 9-1 (Occidental was also 8-1 coming into Saturday's action) and 15-6 overall. Pomona-Pitzer slips to 3-18 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

Redlands led 26-13 late in the first half, but Pomona-Pitzer scored eight straight points, including a three-pointer from freshman guard Ruthie Shapiro (Moraga, Calif.) to pull within 26-21.

The Bulldogs had the final basket of the first half, but Pomona-Pitzer had four quick points to start the second half and get within 28-25 on a jumper that beat the shot clock buzzer from senior guard Asha Gipson (San Diego, Calif.) with 17:15 to go.

However, the Sagehens were held to only four points the rest of the way, as Redlands used a 12-0 run to take a 40-25 lead on a three-pointer from Mariah Barbetti-Cort with 10:23 to go. Freshman guard Caroline Zaia (Napa, Calif.) stopped the run with a jumper with 8:00 to play, but that was the last Sagehen field goal as Redlands held Pomona-Pitzer to just two more foul shots (and eight total points in the second half).

Junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif. - pictured) led the Sagehens with 11 points, all of which came in the first half, while Redlands was led by Victoria Fakalata, who had 16 points on 8-10 shooting off the bench.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action when it travels to Caltech on Thursday.
