Three-Point Barrage Leads La Verne Past Sagehens

Box Score

La Verne, Calif. - The La Verne Women's Basketball team made 26 three-pointers, nine from guard Kelly Kika, as it captured a 113-61 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.

Kika finished with 32 points, leading five players in double figures for the Leopards, who improve to 6-17 and 4-8 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 4-19 overall and 2-10 in league play.

La Verne raced out to a 61-37 halftime lead as Kika had 24 points on 8-10 shooting from three-point territory in the first 20 minutes. Junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 17 points on five three-pointers in the first half herself, but was overshadowed by the hot shooting from her counterparts.

The Sagehens hung close for a while, and were down just 27-21 midway through the first half, but Kika closed out the opening stanza with two three-pointers in the final minute to stretch the game wide open.

Sones finished with 23 for Pomona-Pitzer, including seven three-pointers, one game after making a career-high six three-pointers in a win over Caltech. Senior forward Asha Gipson (pictured) added 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action when it travels to CMS on Thursday, before ending the season with a home game against Whittier next Saturday.
