Whittier, Calif. - Stephen Vint (El Cajon, Calif. - pictured, photo by Becky Gaut) had four goals and Jason Cox (Arnold, Md.) added three as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team captured a 15-5 win over Occidental in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at Whittier.
With the win, the top-seeded Sagehens improve to 13-14 overall and 9-0 in SCIAC matches and move on to the semifinals tomorrow at 1 p.m. against fourth-seeded Whittier, which defeated Redlands 11-9 on Friday.
Pomona-Pitzer was able to coast, jumping out to an 11-1 lead at halftime and resting most of its first string down the stretch. Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.), Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.) and Vint opened the game with goals over the first 3:30, and after Occidental scored to make it 3-1, the Sagehens tallied eight unanswered goals over the rest of the first half.
Ryan Higgins (Orinda, Calif.) capped off the first quarter with a goal with eight seconds left to make the score 6-1, and Phillip Clayman (Clovis, Calif.) added back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the second quarter to stretch the lead to 8-1. Seniors Karl Kumbier (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Mike Dairyko (Chicago, Ill.) added goals to their resume in the final SCIAC Postseason Tournament of their careers.
Pomona-Pitzer won the regular season meeting with Whittier 9-7 at Haldeman Pool, in a game that the Sagehens led 9-3 late before Whittier scored four goals in the closing minutes to pull within two. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Cal Lutheran also advanced to the semifinals with quarterfinal wins on Friday.
