Pomona-Pitzer's Late Season Run Comes Up Short In SCIAC Finals

Box Score

Orange, Calif. - The Chapman Women's Soccer team had four different goal scorers as it defeated Pomona-Pitzer 4-1 in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament finals on Saturday afternoon.

The loss ends the season for the Sagehens at 9-7-1, after it defeated top-seeded Cal Lutheran 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals on Wednesday. Pomona-Pitzer had been 4-0-1 in its last five games, as it rallied from out of the playoff picture into the championship game.

Sophomore midfielder Amanda Coba (Woodinville, Wash. -pictured) broke the Chapman shutout late in the game with her first goal of the season, providing the lone bright spot for Pomona-Pitzer.

Chapman got on the board first at the 16:23 mark on a goal from Karina Cisneros, and went ahead 2-0 at the 31:50 mark on a Rebeccah Bortz goal. The Panthers added a back-breaking goal with 4:54 left in the first half, as Baylor Hogan scored to make it 3-0 at the break.

Aimee Evans stretched the lead to 4-0 just 7:03 into the second half for the Panthers, before Coba made the final score 4-1.

The loss represents the end of the careers of Pomona-Pitzer's four seniors: starting defenders Jordan Bryant (Pomona, Calif.), Claire Mueller (Lincoln, Neb.) and Anika Burrell (Ridgefield, Wash.) and forward Claudia Zaugg (San Diego, Calif.). The group took over a program that had not been to the SCIAC tournament since 2006, yet earned a second-place finish in the regular season in 2011 and a second-place finish in the tournament in 2012.
