UC Santa Cruz Knocks Off Sagehens At David Wells Classic

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - The UC Santa Cruz Women's Basketball team completed a 2-0 weekend at the David Wells Classic with a 73-34 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening at Ducey Gymnasium on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The Banana Slugs, who improve to 4-1 on the year, also defeated CMS on Friday at Voelkel Gymnasium 59-31, as their stingy defense made it difficult on both SCIAC teams to score. The Sagehens fall to 0-2 on the year with the defeat.

Sarah Mackey led the way for UC Santa Cruz with 17 points on 7-7 shooting from the floor, while Ryane Ortiz added 16 points on 5-8 shooting. The Banana Slugs as a team shot 52.9 percent for the game, compared to 27.7 percent for Pomona-Pitzer, which shot a respectable 8-18 in the first half (44.4 percent), but just 5-29 after intermission.

Sophomore guard Ruthie Shapiro (Moraga, Calif. - pictured) had eight points, tying senior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) for team-high honors. Freshman forward Amelia Hummel (Glenview, Ill.) led the Sagehens in rebounding for the second game in a row with seven.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Thursday when it opens SCIAC play with a road game at Chapman.
