Sweeney Has Big Day, But Sagehens Fall 24-7

Box Score

Anaheim, Calif. - Senior running back Luke Sweeney (Broken Arrow, Okla. - pictured, photo courtesy of Joe Bergman, D3photography.com) rushed for 169 yards to inch closer to the school's career record, but the Chapman Football team scored touchdowns on its first two possessions and captured a 24-7 win on Saturday night.

With the win, Chapman improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC to stay in a first place tie. Pomona-Pitzer slips to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play with the loss.

Sweeney missed the first two games of this season after leading the nation a year ago (177.4 yards per game). He had a tough 80 yards at No. 8 Cal Lutheran last weekend, and raised his total to 2,568 yards with his performance this evening, moving him into second place past Jonathan Samples (2,479 yards from 2000-03). He is now just 199 yards away from the school record of 2,767, held by Jim Regan (1995-98).

Robin Harris caught touchdown passes of 43 and 27 yards from Andrew Chavez on the first two possessions for Chapman to give the Panthers a quick 14-0 lead just 7:20 into the game. The Sagehens settled in on defense after that, and allowed only a field goal after a turnover with 46 seconds left in the half, and a single second-half touchdown on a four-yard run from Jeremiah McKibbins.

Pomona-Pitzer's offense, though, was unable to balance Sweeney's ground game with other weapons until 7:40 left in the game, as senior quarterback Luke Ferguson (Silverton, Ore.) connected from 26 yards out with junior wide receiver Ryan Randle (Compton, Calif.) for the only score of the game for the Sagehens.

Sophomore linebacker Michael Etzel (Wilsonville, Ore.) had a huge night defensively with 12 tackles (five solo), including five for losses and a forced fumble. Sophomore defensive back Don Swan (Gold Beach, Ore.) added nine tackles and his first collegiate interception. McKibbins finished with 150 yards on the day

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest.
