Claremont, Calif. – In their final match of the 2012 season, the Pomona-Pitzer volleyball fell to the Chapman Panthers in a tight 3-0 sweep on Saturday night.
After quickly letting the Panthers pull away with the first game 25-11, the Sagehens held tough in the second set falling 25-18. Chapman didn't let up in the third game, pulling themselves to victory by a score of 25-15.
With the loss, Pomona-Pitzer ends their season with a 9-15 overall record and a 4-12 record in the SCIAC. The 23rd-ranked Chapman Panthers improve to 22-5 and 14-2 in SCIAC ahead of the conference tournament.
The match marked Senior Night for the Sagehens, and the match began with an emotion ceremony for the team's only senior, libero Lauren Kim (pictured). An SCIAC All-Academic team selection last year, Kim has been a defense force for the Sagehens throughout her four years and has averaged an impressive 4.1 digs per game this season. Against eighth-ranked Cal Lutheran, Kim accumulated a season-high 25 digs.
For the first time this season, Maria Weyhrauch led the stats sheet for the Sagehens as she hit eight kills, just ahead of offensive leaders Michelle Schultz and Ellen Yamasaki whom both had six. Kate Ferrin led Chapman with 10 kills in 16 attempts with only one error, for a .562 hitting percentage.
With only one graduating senior, the young talent of Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens has plenty of potential giving hope for more strong SCIAC showings in the years to come.
