Claremont, Calif. - Junior Ryan Higgins (Orinda, Calif.) scored four goals and senior Jason Cox (Arnold, Md. - pictured) added three as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team defeated Cal Lutheran 12-10 on Wednesday.
The win improves Pomona-Pitzer's record to 5-12 overall on the year and a perfect 2-0 in the SCIAC, after opening league play with a 12-7 win over La Verne last week.
Higgins continued his torrid play of late after earning the Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week earlier today for his 12 goals in a 4-1 week for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer did have to hold off a late Cal Lutheran rally. After leading 5-2 at the half, the Sagehens exploded for a six-goal third quarter that saw them take a seemingly commanding 11-6 lead after three. However, the Kingsmen scored four straight goals to start the fourth quarter to pull within 11-10, but Pomona-Pitzer was able to get an insurance goal and hold on for the victory.
Junior Tyler Hill (Lafayette, Calif.) started in goal and had eight saves for the Sagehens, while sophomore Austin Strong (Kuai, Hawaii) played the second half and had five. Danny Mock had 10 saves for the Kingsmen.
Five other players had one goal apiece for Pomona-Pitzer, including Jarrod Gaut (Irvine, Calif.), Stephen Vint (El Cajon, Calif.), Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.), Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.) and Trevor Roszkos (La Canada, Calif.).
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday for a road match against Occidental, before returning home to face Redlands next Wednesday.
