Claremont, Calif. - Senior setter Kenzie Aries (Escondido, Calif.) had 40 assists and 10 digs, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the final three sets to earn a 3-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday evening at the Rains Center.

Set scores were 23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-19 as the Athenas earned the win to improve to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the SCIAC. The Sagehens slip to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 1-0 lead by pulling out a close 25-23 decision in the first set. The set-winning point came as Aries set up freshman outside hitter Ellen Yamasaki (Salinas, Calif. - pictured), who struck a perfectly-placed cross-court kill inside the line.

The second set was equally close, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was the one who came up with the final point, as Courtney Searls had the final kill off an assist from Taylor Jones to give the Athenas the 25-23 win.

After the intermission, C-M-S jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead and was able to hold off several Pomona-Pitzer rallies to come away with a 25-17 win. The final set saw the Sagehens hang tough most of the way, but Bennett Jones came up with a key service ace for the 24th point and the Athenas were able to put down a kill to finish off the fourth set 25-19 and win the match.

Yamasaki led the way with 15 kills for the Sagehens, while also adding three blocks. Senior libero Heidi Leonard (Del Mar, Calif.) led the defense with 19 digs, while senior outside hitter Jordan Hammond (Tulsa, Okla.) had 10 kills. Taylor Jones had 46 assists and Megan Coleman had 28 digs for the Athenas, while Monique Nguyen led three players in double figures with 15 kills.

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it hosts Occidental on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
