Claremont, Calif. - Freshman midfielder Nate Shekita (San Jose, Calif.) scored the game-winner in the 77th minute of regulation and junior midfielder Danny Nasry (Portland, Ore.) added an insurance goal in the 89th minute, as Pomona-Pitzer defeated La Verne 2-0 on Saturday morning.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 2-3 on the year and level their record at 1-1 in the SCIAC. 

The game was scoreless into the final minutes, when Nasry was able to find Shekita in the box, who tallied his first collegiate goal in a key moment (celebration pictured - photo courtesy of Bryan Matsumoto).

Nasry then tacked on a second goal in the final minute, finding the back of the net with just 1:06 left on the clock to seal the game.

Pomona-Pitzer had the best chance in a scoreless first half in the 31st minute when freshman Geordie Marriner (Bellingham, Wash.) rattled the underside of the crossbar off a corner kick from Nasry. The ball bounced straight down into the goalmouth, but did not cross the line as the La Verne defense was able to clear it away from pressure.

The Sagehens started five freshmen on the day and only one senior - forward Evan Munoz (Damien, Calif.), as it continued to build its youthful roster. They controlled play for most of the contest, outshooting the Leopards 17-6, while goalkeeper Rollie Thayer (Shorewood, Minn.) did not have to make a save to get the shutout.

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it travels up the road to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
