Box Score Redlands, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team outshot Redlands 26-8, but surrendered two second-half goals as it dropped a 2-1 road SCIAC decision on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Sagehens to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the SCIAC, while Redlands improves to 7-3-1 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
The Sagehens appeared to be on their way to an easy win at halftime. Senior forward Traci Lopez (Santa Fe, N.M. - pictured) scored in the first minute of the game off a pass from sophomore midfielder Allie Tao (Alamo, Calif.), and Pomona-Pitzer held a 13-1 edge in shots in the first stanza, with five saves from Linzey Smith keeping Redlands in the game. The Lopez goal was her seventh of the season, a team-high.
Pomona-Pitzer took the first two shots of the second half as well, extending its advantage in that category to 15-1, but the second shot for Redlands went in, as Samantha Rivera took a deep shot from the left wing that just deflected off the fingertips of Sagehen goalkeeper Emma Wolfarth (Arlington, Va.) and trickled over the line to level the score at 1-1.
The score remained the same until 10:17 left in the contest, when Fionna Connolly headed in a corner kick for the Bulldogs to give her team its first lead of the game at 2-1.
Pomona-Pitzer kept the pressure on with five shots in the final 10 minutes, but it was unable to find the equalizer as the Bulldogs leveled the season series. The Sagehens won the first meeting between the schools 2-0 back on Sept. 14 in Claremont.
Wolfarth had two saves for the Sagehens, while the two goalies for Redlands combined for seven saves.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Monday when it travels to Whittier to make up a game which was rained out on Wednesday.
