Sagehens Close Out Regular Season With 5-1 Win Over Whittier

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - Traci Lopez (Sante Fe, N.M.) had a goal and an assist in the first hald on her Senior Day as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Whittier 5-1 in the regular season finale on Saturday morning.

Sophomore Lilli Barrett-O'Keefe (Evanston, Ill.) added two breakaway goals 1:25 apart early in the second half to help put the game away (goal celebration pictured).

With the win, Pomona-Pitzer reaches the 10-win plateau (10-5-1) and finishes 7-4-1 in SCIAC play, good for a tie for second place in the final standings with CMS (which has the tiebreaker for conference tournament seeding). Whittier ends its season at 2-15 overall and 2-10 in the SCIAC.

Lopez got the Sagehens going with a goal just 4:58 into the game. Sophomore midfielder Allie Tao (Alamo, Calif.) started the play by getting the ball deep into the box. Whittier attempted to clear, but Lopez intercepted the ball inside the top of the penalty area and one-timed a shot into the left side of the net for her 11th goal of the season.

Lopez then helped stretch the lead to 2-0 when she played a through ball to sophomore midfielder Erin Edmonds (Salem, Ore.). Edmonds arrived at the ball 15 yards from goal just before onrushing Poets goalkeeper Shanna Falch could get there and tucked a low shot underneath her and into the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Wolfarth (Arlington, Va.) was tested once on a flick shot from Danielle Kwasniowski off a cross from six yards out, but she was able to make a reflex save to keep the score 2-0.

Barrett-O'Keefe then struck for her first two goals of the season 1:25 apart, both after long balls were played out of the back as she beat the Whittier off-sides trap. The first came from freshman Samantha Thompson (Huntington Beach, Calif.), who put Barrett-O'Keefe in alone behind the defense as she scored her first at the 53:25 mark.

The second came from freshman Dana Christensen (San Diego, Calif.), who played a long ball ahead and this time Barrett O'Keefe had to shield off a Whittier defender and nod the ball forward in order to get in behind. She was able to run onto the ball and tuck another low shot into the net for her second goal of the season just 1:25 after she scored her first at the 54:50 mark.

Whittier responded with its only goal of the match as Chelsea Irha scored from 15 yards off a pass from Madison Shipherd at the 56:08 mark. Junior Claudia Zaugg (San Diego, Calif.) added a goal with 4:21 to play off a pass from Edmonds to finish off the scoring.

Pomona-Pitzer had a 15-13 edge in shots on the day. Wolfarth had four saves, and Falch had three for the Poets.

The Sagehens will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to CMS for a SCIAC semifinal game.
