Eight Sagehens Score In 8-0 Win Over Caltech

Box Score

Claremont, Calif - Eight different players scored goals as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team defeated Caltech 8-0 in a SCIAC game on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-7 on the year and 7-4 in the SCIAC as they hold on to third place in the league standings (the top four qualify for the conference tournament) with three games to play. Caltech falls to 1-13 overall and 1-10 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Freshman Arash Mahboubi (La Canada, Calif.) got Pomona-Pitzer started in the 18th minute when he got to a through ball from senior Alec Halpern (San Diego, Calif.) on the right side of the field. Mahboubi pushed the ball past the last Caltech defender and had a one-on-one with goalkeeper Wesley Swank before picking out his corner and slipping a shot into the side netting inside the left post.

The Sagehens stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 24th minute, as freshman Avery Raimondo (Quogue, N.Y.) played a cross from the right side. Freshman forward Nathan Shekita (San Jose, Calif.) one-touched the ball to the far side, where sophomore midfielder Michael Ceragioli (Incline Village, Nev.) hammered a one-timer under the crossbar.

Shekita helped set up one more goal before intermission on a corner kick as he served a ball inside the six-yard box that got through to the far post, where junior midfielder Danny Nasry (Portland, Ore.) headed it home from in close.

The second half saw freshman forward Lawrence McDonald (Oakland, Calif.) knock home his team-high fourth goal of the season to make the score 4-0, before Raimondo one-timed a shot from in close off a cross to make it 5-0.

Late in the game, with the benches emptied, the Sagehens tacked on three goals in the final 3:10, as Halpern, sophomore forward Ian Maier (Portland, Ore.), and freshman defender Mark Raftrey (Palo Alto, Calif.) each found the net to make the final score 8-0.

Halpern finished with one goal and two assists for Pomona-Pitzer, while Raimondo, Mahboubi and Raftery each had a goal and assist as the Sagehens held a 29-4 edge in shots.

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it travels to Occidental on Saturday in a SCIAC match-up before closing out the regular season next week with games against Cal Lutheran and Whittier.
