Box Score Orange, Calif. – Kate Ferrin had 12 kills to lead a balanced offense as the Chapman Volleyball team took a 3-0 decision from Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday evening.
With the win, Chapman improves to 17-7 on the season, while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 5-13 on the year with the loss. Set scores were 25-20, 25-13 and 25-15.
The Sagehens got off to a sluggish start in the first set, as they trailed 20-9, before picking up their level of play. A 10-3 run got Pomona-Pitzer as close as 23-19, led by two kills from senior Jordan Hammond (Tulsa, Okla.), but Chapman was able to tally two of the last three points to come away with the 25-20 win.
The second set saw Chapman jump out quickly to a 10-2 lead and Pomona-Pitzer was never able to sustain a run to get back into the set, as the Panthers took a 2-0 lead with a 25-13 win.
The final set resulted in Chapman again grabbing the early lead at 10-4, but the Sagehens were able to get back within 12-9, following a kill and block from sophomore Sophie Tweed-Simmons (Beverly Hills, Calif.). Three straight Panthers points, though, stretched the lead to 17-10, and Chapman closed out the set 25-15.
Senior libero Heidi Leonard (Del Mar, Calif.) had 19 digs for the Sagehens defensively, but offensively they were unable to find a hot hand, as freshman Ellen Yamasaki (Salinas, Calif.) led with five kills, while senior Carly Hite (Buffalo, N.Y.) had four. Corrine Ostrovsky led the Chapman attack with 39 assists.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Tuesday, when it travels to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
