The Pomona-Pitzer men's swim and dive team opened up the new year with a victory over the visiting Tigers of Occidental College this past Saturday at Haldeman Pool. After opening the meet with a disqualification in the Medley Relay, the Sagehens dominated for most of the meet and eventually won 142-79. With the win, the Saghens moved to 2-1 on the season.
Sophomore J.P. Cumming raced to first place in both his individual events as he cruised to season best times in the 1000 and 500 free in times of 10:26.05 and 5:04.99. Junior Max Scholten was also a double event winner taking first in the 200 and 100 free in times of 1:50.74 and 49.17. Freshmen Gabe Leggott was the top Sagehen finisher in the 50 free with a time of 23.60. In the 200 IM, the Sagehens finished 1-2-3 with Chris Wright (Jr.), Tyson Chihara (Jr.) and Erik Peterson (Sr.) beating out the opposition.
Twenty minutes later, Chris Wright and Erik Peterson teamed up with Sophomore Tommy DePaoli to go 1-2-3 in the 200 fly as well. All three went season-best times. Another 1-2-3 finish in the 200 back was led by Junior Joe LaBriola, followed by Gabe Leggott and Sophomore Cody Moore. In the 200 breaststroke, Tommy DePaoli, Tyson Chihara and freshman Nathan Yale placed 2-3-4.
Finishing out the meet was the relay of Joe LaBriola, Brian Williamson (Fr.), Chris Wright, and Tom Cleveland (Jr.) which placed second overall.
