From 1959 to 2003, Anne served Pomona College in many capacities, including a 25-year stint as a Physical Educator/Coach/Administrator.
In college, Anne earned her B.A. at the University of Illinois in 1956. Next, she ventured out west to complete her Master of Science in Physical Education at UCLA, and worked there as a teaching assistant and instructor. Next stop: Pomona College.
Anne worked tirelessly to create athletic opportunities for women over the next 25 years, and teamed with her Department members and colleagues across the country to work in support of the passage of Title IX. Anne assumed important leadership positions as Chair of the Department of Physical Education, and was also the first female to serve as Director of Athletics. It was through Anne's leadership that Pomona-Pitzer Athletics navigated its way to the amazing athletic program available to Pomona and Pitzer female student-athletes today.
Anne built an impressive women's tennis program, which lives on today. Anne coached the team from 1959 to 1984 and her teams won numerous team and individual titles at various SoCal tournaments, such as the prestigious Ojai Tournament. Anne's teams and individuals participated in numerous regional and state championships in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) in the pre-NCAA era. In 1971, Pomona-Pitzer defeated the UCLA Women's Tennis team, 5-4, to notch a huge team victory. In both 1977 and 1978, Anne's teams went undefeated in SCIAC and won the Conference title, and her squad added the 1979 title, as well. In 1980, Anne coached the Sagehens to the Conference Tournament title, and the team was co-champs for the regular season. In 1978, Anne coached her top doubles team to third place at the AIAW National Small College Championships. In 1982, Ann mentored the squad to a 4th place tie at the NCAA Team Championships. In 1984, Anne's team was ranked sixth nationally, and finished tied for 7th at the NCAA Team Championships. In addition to her role as Head Coach of Tennis, Anne also served as Head Coach of Women's Swimming from 1965 to the early 1970s.
Anne produced Aquacade, an annual event featuring a synchronized swimming performance. In the Pomona Physical Education Department, Anne taught a variety of activity classes, including swimming, tennis, softball, archery, bowling, badminton, and basketball. Anne also served as the Coordinator of Women's Studies for The Claremont Colleges from 1985 to 1988.
Anne's support of Pomona-Pitzer Athletics did not end when she left the Department of Physical Education in 1984 to assume the role of Director of Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations -- nor did her support end when she retired from the College in 2003. Anne is a loyal Sagehen fan at Pomona-Pitzer Athletic events and Department events, and makes a point to stay connected to the coaches and student-athletes. Today she continues to be an important mentor and friend to many around campus and in town.
