CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Volleyball Team fell in three sets against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday night, losing by the scores of 20-25, 23-25, and 19-25. Naomi Chen-Mallouk led the attack with 14 kills while Isabel Kelly had 13 kills with two block assists. Lauren Asato had a solid game in protecting the floor, making acrobatic dives to collect 20 digs.
Season Impact: The Sagehens are now 9-9 overall and 3-5 in SCIAC play.
After the Athenas jumped to a 4-0 lead early in the first set, the Sagehens quickly tied it up after a 5-0 run, including two service aces by Adrienne Tong. The two sides battled closely for majority of the set, but the Athenas pulled away after leading 20-19 with a four-point run. The Sagehens took a point back thanks to a huge block from Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong, but CMS closed out the set 25-20.
The second set was more intense battle, with neither side able to build a significant lead. The Sagehens managed an early four-point run that was capped by a free ball kill from Chen-Mallouk to lead 6-3. CMS tied it back and the two sides traded points for majority of the set. With a 13-12 lead, the Sagehens managed to build a three-point lead after a kill from Chen-Mallouk and a service ace by Tong. Trailing 18-15, CMS rallied for five points to take back the lead. Behind 24-22, the Sagehens tried to climb back in thanks to a kill by Kelly, but CMS sealed the second set after a kill by Melanie Moore.
CMS and Pomona-Pitzer were tied in the third set at nine apiece, but the Athenas climbed back after a three-point run. A 5-0 run while ahead 15-13 put CMS well within reach of taking the set. Behind 24-17, the Sagehens battled back with two straight points, including a big kill from Chen-Mallouk, but CMS sealed the set after a kill from Lucila Grinspan.
