LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Volleyball dropped a road contest to University of La Verne on Tuesday night, falling to the Leopards 3-0 (17-25, 18-25, 20-25). The Sagehens' attack was led by Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong who had 10 kills with a .238 kill percentage while Adrienne Tong delivered 33 assists. The Leopards' offense were led by Haley Celaya who had 13 kills while Ayana Mier had nine kills with two solo and assist blocks.
Season Impact: The Sagehens are now 9-8 overall and 3-4 in the SCIAC.
The Sagehens battled closely with the Leopards in the beginning of the opening set, as Addo-Ashong crushed a big hit to cut the Leopards' lead 11-9. However, La Verne rallied for three straight points to extend their lead 15-10 and pulled away from that point. With a 20-16 lead, La Verne broke out for a 5-1 run to win the first set.
The Leopards capitalized on a seven-point run in the middle of the second set to lead 17-10. The deficit proved too much to overcome as the Leopards cruised to a 25-18 victory.
In the final set, the Sagehens looked to keep it close, overcoming an early 3-0 deficit to tie it 8-8. The Leopards rallied for six straight points, to take a 14-8 lead. Pomona-Pitzer answered back with a 4-1 rally, during which Naomi Chen-Mallouk had two kills off a pass from Tong, to cut the deficit 22-18. Unfortunately, the Leopards held on to win the final set 25-20.
